We live in an age when many of us are convinced that, to diminish the crime rate, jailed individuals ought to be given longer prison terms, while others believe that there are different alternative solutions. In this essay, I will review both viewpoints and give my opinion.
On the one hand, there is a group of people who strongly believe that the terms of inmates should be lengthened for several reasons. First of all, due to maximum security in penal colonies and the time prisoners spend there, they could rehabilitate. Moreover, those factors can allow them to become better; namely, to change their mindset, ideology, and worldview. Secondly, expansion of prison time will make the lives of ordinary people safer.
On the other hand, the other half of society has the opposite opinion. In this view, there are various alternatives, such as development of education levels and growth in job opportunities. Firstly, by the improvement of the quality of education and its availability, more human beings could be educated and cultured, so they will not begin to do any types of illegal activities. Secondly, increasing work positions will promote a reduction in the crime rate, because if people have jobs, then they would not do illegal occupations.
Taking everything into consideration, there are two different viewpoints on this theme. Some people think that years in prison should be increased, but others are convinced that there are various ways to deal with crime. I strongly agree with the second statement, because increasing the time spent in jail is inhumane.
