Band 9: Housing is a basic necessity for everyone. Therefore, government should provide free housing for people who cannot afford to pay it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People have different views as to whether governments should provide homes for those who are unable to afford them. While some believe this is essential for social equity, I argue that individuals should be encouraged to meet their housing needs independently to promote resilience and self-sufficiency.

Proponents of government-provided housing cite various reasons to support their stance. When people receive governmental assistance in securing housing, they can save a substantial amount of money, thus allowing them to provide for their families, cover living expenses, and invest an income-generating assets. This can ultimately pave the way for long-term financial stability and freedom, which can improve their overall quality of life. This is particularly beneficial for those from low-income families, who need to secure a stable income to escape the cycle of poverty. At a time when expenses escalate due to high inflation and tax rates, financial support from the government can make a big difference in reducing the burden on struggling households and ensuring equal access to essential services.

Despite these arguments, in my opinion, it is more beneficial for people to take responsibility for their housing needs. By doing so, individuals can develop essential qualities such as resilience, self-reliance, and financial independence, all of which contribute to personal growth. In a competitive world where people strive for better standards of living, greater educational qualifications, and better employment opportunities, those who overcome obstacles independently are more likely to stand out, gain valuable life skills, and achieve long-term success. A good case in point is Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur, who attributes his achievements to self-determination and perseverance during challenging times. Encouraging self-sufficiency in housing rather than reliance on governmental support can foster innovation and determination among individuals, ultimately benefiting both society and the economy as a whole.

In conclusion, although government-provided housing can alleviate financial struggles for the underprivileged, I am convinced that promoting self-reliance in securing housing is more beneficial for personal growth and societal progress.
