The maps give detailed information about the changes that have taken place in Nelson since 2000.
Overall, it is clear that there has been a dramatic transformation of Nelson town from a simple, underdeveloped area to a more vibrant and more visitor friendly zone over the given period, with the development of commercial areas and dining facilities.
Looking at the details, in 2000, the town had a simple view. There were only three buildings, one of which was a university that was located in the north. The remaining two buildings, train station and old market, were situated in the west next to the city center. This city center and port were empty without any buildings or services. The last things to note were the main road for cars running from West to East and the green zone on the top-right hand corner.
After some developments, the town has experienced changes in its structure, with the introduction of more modern buildings. There are now more shopping areas with more modern design. One of them has been built instead of the green zone, while two other shopping facilities have been constructed to the west and to the east of the city center, which have been filled with bikes for renting. The port has also been redeveloped with the introduction of restaurants, bars and clubs just below the road which has been converted into pedestrian area. Besides, multi-story residential building has been constructed on the top-left hand corner while the train station has been relocated to the top of the city center with some development.
