Band 6+: More and more universities are replacing face-to-face teaching with online courses. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, an increasing number of universities are replacing face-to-face teaching with online learning. In this essay, I will discuss both the positive and negative aspects of this issue.

First of all, the replacement of traditional teaching with virtual learning in universities can have huge beneficial impacts on the daily life of people, particularly in terms of convenience and accessibility. When studying face-to-face, the first thing you have to deal with is going to places, which is not easy, especially for the people that live in a busy city or in the mountains. That is when online teaching comes in handy. With only an electronic device and the internet, you can attend all the online classes in the university from afar at any time and not have to waste any money on transportation or dealing with traffic jams. Not only that, it also saves you plenty of times to do other things that need to be done. And even if you encounter a chore that needs to be done in the middle of studying, you can always record the online teaching which the university presents and review it later when you are available.

Secondarily, despite the advantages and efficiencies of digital education, there are also lots of negative sides to this development, one of which is a lack of social skills. By attending courses online, students in the university are hardly interacting with each other and only with the screen. This results in miscommunication and isolation between classmates, as students have fewer opportunities to participate in group activities or form meaningful relationships. Additionally, when staring at the screen from either our mobile phones or computers for too long, it will eventually cause us health problems such as headaches, eye problems or poor posture.

In conclusion, while replacing face-to-face teaching with virtual learning in universities brings many positive impacts and helps our life become easier, it still has other negative side effects. Therefore, it is advisable for teachers in the university to maintain a balance between traditional and virtual learning methods to ensure that students receive both the benefits of digital education and the advantages of face-to-face learning.
