Band 8+: Some say that reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time, because it has no direct connection with people's lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, the advent of social media has facilitated easy communication among individuals. The question arises as to whether engaging in reading newspapers and watching TV news is a futile activity due to its perceived lack of relevance to people’s lives. This essay articulates my stance against the notion that newspapers and TV news are inconsequential.

To begin with, TV news programs and newspapers play a crucial role in keeping individuals informed about global events. These sources are regularly updated, allowing people to stay current on international affairs such as the economy and politics. Furthermore, they serve to raise public awareness about various issues, enabling individuals to respond appropriately. For example, ‘VTV News’ in Vietnam broadcasts daily, offering insights into both local and global issues, thus promoting a deeper understanding among Vietnamese citizens.

Moreover, TV news and newspapers are considered more reliable compared to other media channels when it comes to disseminating information. These platforms are officially certified by the government, ensuring the accuracy and dependability of the information provided. In contrast, social media platforms can sometimes spread false or misleading information, leading to detrimental consequences for individuals or organizations. For instance, the tragic case of a Chinese man’s suicide due to personal relationship issues was widely distorted by various Vietnamese social media pages, ultimately causing distress to his girlfriend and tarnishing his memory.

However, opponents of this viewpoint may argue that the abundance of information available on social networks, due to the widespread use of the Internet, renders traditional newspapers and TV news redundant. Nonetheless, it should be noted that individuals residing in remote areas may lack access to the Internet, making newspapers and TV programs their primary sources of information. For instance, in the impoverished Vietnamese mountainous regions, where Internet connectivity is limited by financial constraints, newspapers and TV broadcasts serve as vital means for inhabitants to stay informed about the world. Therefore, I contend that reading newspapers and watching TV news remains invaluable for many people.

In conclusion, I firmly reject the notion that engaging with newspapers and TV news is a waste of time due to its perceived disconnect from people’s lives. It is imperative to acknowledge that social media platforms can provide summaries of news, catering to the preferences of certain individuals. However, the accessibility and credibility of traditional newspapers and TV news make them essential sources of information, especially for those in underserved communities.
