Band 7+: In the past, important knowledge of culture and history was stored in museums. Nowadays information is freely available on the internet, therefore museums are no longer needed. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

For a long time, museums have been playing a significant role in preserving both cultural and historical information. Nevertheless, some recently have started doubting the need for museums due to the possibility of getting data online, and I completely disagree with them for two reasons.

The primary argument in support of museums is the fact that they provide clear and transparent evidence of artifacts. One can assume that the same exists on the internet, however, even the most popular sources such as Wikipedia, which openly admits that they may be vulnerable for disinformation, cannot ensure the reliability of data. Thus, museums turn out to be the only trustworthy source of information nowadays, since people can not only view the exhibits, but also sometimes interact with them. What is more, such places would inevitably lose their reputation, hence popularity, if they neglected fact-checking, therefore, it is a must for them to be scientifically accurate towards objects.

Another reason for disagreement is that museums are vital for educational purposes. It is clear that some subjects are better comprehended with actual demonstrations either because of their complexity or boredom. For example, some schools organize special museum tours for history classes to show students real appearance of artifacts or demonstrate the approximate condition of the area in the past, making the learning process more fascinating. In addition to this, some university courses include visits to museums, showcasing that they are not merely about preservation, but more of a useful tool for education.

In conclusion, I do not support the idea that museums are futile in these days despite the fact of easy access to the internet and the data there. For, museums provide superior authenticity as well as the educational benefits.
