In 2006, the amount of potatoes eaten was 96.1 kg per person in Europe, which was threefold higher than the figure for Asia, at 25.8 kg. The second highest was North America accounting for 57.9 kg. Regarding South and Central America and Africa, they had almost similar consumption, attributing to 23.6 kg and 14.1 kg, respectively.
In terms of production, Asia dominated with 131.2 million tonnes being produced compared to Europe’s figure, at 126.3. South and Central America and Africa also recorded the least figures in the production, both making up approximately 16 million tonnes. By contrast, North America represented the average production of potatoes, constituting 24.7 million tonnes in 2006.
