The tables compare potato consumption per person and total potato production in five world regions in 2006.
Overall, Europe had the highest level of potato consumption per capita, while Asia was the leading producer. Africa recorded the lowest figures for consumption, whereas South and Central America showed relatively modest levels in both categories.
Regarding consumption, Europe ranked first, with approximately 96 kilograms of potatoes consumed per person each year. North America followed at about 58 kilograms. In contrast, consumption in Asia was much lower, at roughly 15 kilograms per person, while Africa recorded the smallest amount, at around 14 kilograms. People in South and Central America consumed slightly more than Africans, at approximately 24 kilograms per capita.
A different pattern can be seen in production figures. Asia dominated global potato production, producing about 131 million tonnes, far exceeding Europe’s output of roughly 58 million tonnes. North America produced around 25 million tonnes, while South and Central America and Africa recorded significantly lower levels, at approximately 14 and 11 million tonnes respectively.
In conclusion, regions with the highest potato consumption were not necessarily the largest producers.
