The bar chart illustrates the proportion of three groups of children in Japan participating in four different types of activities in 2018.
Overall, watching TV was the highest whereas the opposite was true for playing computer games. In addition, the highest figure was seen in riding the bike in groups of over 12.
Regarding the activities with increased public interest, watching TV was by far the most common type of activity, attracting approximately 92% of 5 to 8-year-olds old whereas playing computer games was 60%. The lowest difference of 9-to-11-year-olds was respectively 80% and 58% for those 2 types. Meanwhile, at 80%, the percentage of watching TV was 2 times as many as that of playing computer games, 40%.
Regarding the remaining activities, a more stable trend was observed in reading and riding the bike, as its level of taking part in fluctuated between 61% and 63% of players. Although the 9-to-11-year-old group’s reading stood at 70% was higher than riding the bike at 61%, the 12-to-16-year-old group’s riding the bike reached a high of 81%, and reading remained the same as the group above.
