The pie charts illustrate the revenue distribution of five different genres of books belonging to a bookseller in 1972, 1992, and 2012.
Overall, books targeting adult and children readers dominated the chart across all three periods. While these two genres showed an increasing trend, the opposite was observed for the others.
The most popular genres in 1972 were adult and children’s novels, each accounting for 20% of the revenue, while other book genres accounted for 25%. Over time, the revenue share of adult fiction and children’s fiction increased from 20% to 45% and 20% to 25%, respectively. In contrast, other genres saw a declining trend, with their share dropping to 12% in 2012.
The less common genres were biography and travel books, which had a revenue share of 20% and 15%, respectively, in 1972. By 2012, the revenue share of biographies had decreased to 8%, while travel books fluctuated but eventually settled at 10%, surpassing biographies to become the fourth most popular genre.
