The bar chart illustrates the results of a European survey showing young people’s expectations about whether five different areas of life will improve or get worse over the next 20 years.
Overall, it is clear that respondents are generally pessimistic about environmental issues, especially the quality of air in cities, while views on communication and health are more balanced.
In detail, communication between people is expected to improve by a slight majority, with 54% believing it will get better, compared to 46% who think it will worsen. A similar pattern can be seen in health, where 42% expect improvement, while a higher figure of 58% predict a decline.
Regarding food and water quality, opinions are more negative. Just under half of young people (49%) believe the quality of food will improve, whereas 51% think it will deteriorate. Expectations for water quality are even more pessimistic, with 60% anticipating it will get worse and only 40% expecting improvement.
The most negative outlook is for air quality in cities, as 77% of respondents believe it will worsen, while only 23% think it will improve.
