Overall, the majority of people in Australia and New Zealand made purchases from both overseas and local websites, with main reason behind them being lower prices. Although shopping habits of both nations were broadly similar, there were some differences in proportions for some categories.
In 2012, 64% of Australian shoppers preferref to do online shopping from the combination of overseas and local websites, significantly higher than the 50% in New Zealand. Meanwhile/ By contrast, 24% of Austrlians used overseas-only websites, compared to 36% of New Zealanders. Local websites were the least popular among both countries, chosen by only 12% of Australians and 14% New Zealanders.
As for the motives for online purchases, Lower prices were the most influential factor. 59% of Australians cited this reason, in comparison with 51% in New Zealand. Convenience was the second most common reason cited by 23% Australians, while it played smaller role in New Zealand with 13% of people mentioning it. On the other hand, 34% of New Zealanders valued wider range of options, more than double the 16% of Australians. The “none” reason category accounted for only 2% in both countries.
