The pie chart and table illustrate the quantities of people using different websites to shop online, and the reasons why they are choosing online shopping instead of ordinary shopping.
Overall, the majority in Australia and New Zealand are choosing overseas and local websites combined, with the main reason being lower prices. Nevertheless, there were some differences in shopping habits between the two countries.
To begin with, in 2012, 64% of Australians preferred mixed types of websites, which is significantly higher than in New Zealand. Overseas websites became the second most used for shopping in both countries, although in New Zealand this percentage is considerably higher—36%, while it is only 24% in Australia. Local websites alone were less popular, with approximately similar percentages: 12% in Australia and 14% in New Zealand.
With regard to reasons, lower prices are the most common cause for both countries; 59% of Australians named this reason, compared with 51% of New Zealanders. The second most common reason was different in the two countries. 23% of Australians named convenience, while 34% of interviewees from New Zealand mentioned a larger range of choices. To conclude, 2% in both countries did not give a reason for preferring online shopping to traditional shopping.
