The charts show the percentages of US students speaking languages other than English, in the years 2005 and 2015.
Overall, throughout the 10-year period, the proportion of students knowing no additional language decreased significantly. Additionally, Only two segments – students speaking only French and another language – increased in size.
Examining the details, in 2005 almost half (45%) the students did not speak any additional language. This percentage then dropped to 30% by 2015, still being the largest portion of all. Similarly, the portion of people knowing two additional languages, decreased too; from 14% to 12%.
As for the percentage of people knowing another language, there was a noticeable rise. Specifically, while only 10% of the university students spoke another language in 2005, this figure went up to 14% by 2015. A bit more moderate increase can be seen in the case of French language, the figure increasing from 8% to 10%, over a 10-year period.
Finally, the segment of students speaking only German was the only one that did not experience any change, staying at 5% in both years and still being the smallest proportion of all.
