The present line graphs compare the proportion of people who used public transport in five different Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, the number of public transport users in Brisbane and Sydney increased over the ten-year period; however, the other cities did not show any significant changes.
According to the graph, Brisbane had the highest proportion of public transport users in 2010 at 27%. Interestingly, this city ranked third in usage from 2000 to 2002 with only 15%, indicating a moderate upward trend. Meanwhile, Sydney initially had the highest usage at 20% in 2000, but saw only a slight increase to 24% by 2009. In 2010, the percentage remained unchanged from 2009, allowing Sydney to catch up to the second position.
In contrast, the usage of public transport in Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide fluctuated significantly. At the start of the period, each city had the same percentage of users as in 2010. Melbourne began with 18%, but reached a low point in 2004 before peaking between 2005 and 2006, ultimately returning to the same level as in 2000. Perth stabilized during this period, but from 2004 to 2007 saw a maximum usage of 11%. Adelaide’s public transport usage exhibited noticeable fluctuations throughout the decade.
