The pie charts illustrate the proportion of students who participated in second language classes in Australian secondary schools in Melbourne and Sydney in 2017. Overall, Mandarin language was the most popular language followed by Japanese in both cities in the given period, and Sydney schools provided more of these languages to the students than Melbourne schools did.
Regarding Mandarin and Japanese languages, participation percentages for the former classes were 40% in Melbourne, while Sydney pupils participated just 5% more. Likewise, 25% of second language pupils studied the latter in Melbourne as opposed to 30% in Sydney.
As for Italian, Indonesian, and other languages, in Sydney, Italian and Indonesian languages were not as popular as in Melbourne. The first language was three times more desirable in Melbourne than in Sydney, at 5% compared to 15%, respectively, while in Melbourne, the second language was twice as desirable as in Sydney, at 10% compared to 5%, respectively. In contrast, the percentage of other languages was 10% in Melbourne opposed to 15% in Sydney.
