Overall, the proportion spent on housing, travel/transport and luxury goods increased significantly , while food, clothing and entertainment declined. Notably, food was the largest category in 1958 and then was taken by housing in 2008.
Starting with housing, the figure increased over the period, beginning at 22% in 1958 and then surging to 32% in 2008. Travel and transport witnessed a rapid rise from 8% to 17%. Likewise, the category of luxury goods recorded a similar trend from 7% to 17%, with both categories doubling shares to reach an equal to 17% in 2008.
Turning to the proportion of people spending on food, clothing and entertainment, all three categories experienced declined dramatically. Starting with food, this figure experienced a sharp decline from 32% in 1958 to 12% in 2008. The figure for spending on clothing recorded a minor dip, declining from 18% to 16%. Meanwhile, entertainment declined steadily between 13% and 6%, making it the smallest category.
