The given diagram illustrates the process of prodcuing sugar from sugarcane. The farm to market journey is shown using 9 steps.
The first step is to harvest the sugarcane and transport it to factories for further processing. Next, the sugarcane is crushed, soaked and squeezed to extract the juice which will be used to manufacture sugar. The sweet juice of the sugarcane is then boiled until it thickens into a syrup and crystallizes. The crystals produced are spun in a centrifuge to remove any excess liquid. At this stage, we have what is known as raw sugar.
The raw sugar is transported to a refinery to remove any impurities. The raw sugar is melted, and then filtered, to remove the remaining impurites as well as any extra colour. This process leaves us with sugar syrup, from which sugar is extracted by the process of crystallization. The sugar crystals obtained are dried and then packed for distribution.
In conclusion, the diagram conveys in detail, the nine steps of sugar production. Starting from the harvesting and juicing of sugarcane, the process involves boiling the juice and crystallization to produce raw sugar which is then refined and re-crystallized to produce the sugar that we consume.
