These maps compare the site of a central library 20 years ago and today.
Overall every section of the library had changed slightly. The rooms had changed their categories, sizes, shapes, locations, and furniture, but the original structure almost remained the same (perpendicular hallways and rooms at the corners).
The first thing that catches attention is that the tables and chairs had been removed to free up space in the entrance hallway. Another big change is the CDs, videos, and computer games room at the northwest side of the library. It extended its own area, added a few pieces of furniture, and changed into storytelling events with children’s fiction books in the room. On the east side of the library, in the hallway, adult non-fiction books had been replaced by adult fiction books, an information desk, and self-service machines. The room-sized enquiry desk with round edges at the southeast had turned into a cafe in a 20-year period.
There are a lot of less important changes in this library that happened over 20 years. First of all, the west side of the hallway had an adult fiction books section, which changed to all reference books. It’s also noticeable that the same hallway had become narrower than before, due to the computer games room’s expansion. Secondly, the southwest room had changed from a reading room to a computer room, with the entrance moved from the top to the right side, which is the east side of the room. Finally, the last and the most insignificant change of the library is that the room with children’s books from 20 years ago in the northeast corner now serves as a lecture room.
