The following report describes the changes that have taken place at Queen Mary Hospital since its construction in 1960, as depicted in the three diagrams.
The hospital has undergone significant transformations, with adjacent lands being acquired to provide additional services, resulting in significant changes to the layout over the past four decades.
Initially, in 1960, the hospital complex consisted of a single building with a car park situated behind it, accompanied by a shopping centre to the west and farmland at the rear. However, by 1980, the hospital had expanded, replacing the shopping centre with a cancer centre and adding a pharmacy, while the farmland was converted into a nursing school.
In the subsequent period, by 2000, the pharmacy had expanded, overshadowing the diminished cancer centre. Meanwhile, the nursing school had increased in size, with the car park remaining unchanged throughout the transformations. Overall, the hospital’s growth has been characterized by the incorporation of adjacent lands to provide new services, resulting in significant alterations to the original layout.
