In 1997, the number of elephants in India stood at nearly 10000, which was approximately 6 times as much as that of elephants in Vietnam, at less than 2000. Moreover, the figure for Malaysia and Sri Lanka accounted for nearly the same amount, at less than 4000 elephants. In 2004, there was a drastic drop of 2000 elephant in both countries India and Malaysia, while the number of elephants in Vietnam and Sri Lanka declined slightly to less than 2000 and less than 4000 elephants.
Regarding the 5 other countries, the figure for elephants in Cambodia and Laos allocated less than 2000 in 1997, but they later increased slowly to nearly 2000 elephants in 2004. Additionally, the number of elephants in Myanmar, Thailand and China accounted for more than 4000, nearly 4000 ,and less than 2000 in 1997. In 2004, the figure for elephants in Myanmar and China witnessed a slight decrease of less than 500 elephants, while elephants in Thailand declined markedly to less than
