The line chart illustrates the percentage of employment of farmers in four countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Algeria, between 1985 and 2019. In general, the proportion of farmers in all countries reduced significantly thoughout the period.
In detail, all countries experienced a drastic climb between 1990 and 2000, followed by a consistent drop till the final year. Both Nigeria and Kenya saw similar patterns, starting at approximately a third, rising to a peak at 40% in 1995 and 45% in 2000, respectively. After that, the figures for them plummeted to about a quarter two decades later.
Interestingly, South Africa also had a close pattern to Nigeria and Kenya, but it began at 25%, a relatively lower number. This is followed by an upward trend to a top at almost a third, decreasing dramatically to 15% in 2019. It is noteworthy that Algeria maintained the lowest figure over the time frame, comprising a fifth in 1985, experiencing a mild raise to a peak at about 22%, diminishing to just over 10% in the final year.
