The line grahp compares four key sectors of the economy – manufacturing, agriculture, retail, and healthcare – in terms of their proportion of job vacancy in the USA over six decades, 1960-2020. Units are measured in millions.
Although there were considerable flactuations, overall, manufacturing and agriculture experienced an downward trend, albeit with retail and healthcare showed an upward trajectory. Of particular signaficance is the healthcare, which registered the most significant increase, overtaking all others to emerge as the dominant sector.
Starting with the increased figures, in the healthcare job almost climb eight times from approxemately 2 millions in 1960 to nearly 16 millions, while in the retail job category it grew marginally by a mere 6 millions to 16 millions in the latter year.
By contrast, the figures figures for the other sectors declined. Manufacturing job witnessed a 5 millions fall to 20 milions in 1980. In the meantime , in the manufaturing job vacancy decreased by a less extant over the decade , from 20 millions to around 13 millions.
