The line graph illustrates the proportion of tourists to Edinburgh, Scotland who visited an aquarium, castle, zoo, and festival over the period of three decades between 1980 and 2010.
Overall, the graph shows that all attractions experienced fluctuations over the period. The castle and zoo saw a rise in the percentage of visits, while the popularity of the aquarium and festival declined over the period studied.
Initially, around 30% of visitors went to the festival, making it the most popular attraction in 1980. This figure had declined steadily to about a quarter of the total by 1995 and remained relatively unchanged until the end of the period. The castle, however, saw an increase in the percentage of visits, growing from 25% in 1980 to a peak of 45% in 1995, before gradually decreasing to just over 30% by 2010.
The aquarium began with 20% in 1980 and experienced a sharp increase to 35% until 1985. Yet, its popularity declined consistently afterwards, falling to under 10% by 2010. In contrast, the zoo’s attendance remained relatively low and stable for most of the period (roughly 10%) but rose gradually in the final decade to reach 20%.
