It is evident there was an upward trend in male prisoners while the figure for female prisoners declined . Also, the figure for prisoners who were men outnumbered the figure for the female counterparts
In the year 1911, the prison population for the man stood at 20.000 , same as the number of male prisoners in 1971 . The year 1981 witnessed a significant increase in the number of male prisoners at 40.000 . From 1982 to 2001 , the figure for male prisoners slightly increased and finally hit the peak at nearly 49.000
On the contrary, there were virtually 3.300 female prisoners in 1911. The figure for female prisoners dropped to approximately 500 in 1941. In 1961, the number of prisoners who were female rose to above 1.200 and decreased to virtually 800 in 1971. Finally , it steadily grew to 1.600 in 2001
