The given line graph illustrates the population of male and female prisoners in a particular European nation from 1911 to 2001.
As can be seen from the graph, the prison population in females and male saw an adverse trajectory, while the male population increased over the period, its counterpart in females witnessed a downward trend. Noticeably, the number of male was constantly higher than that of the females.
With regards to the population of male prisoners, in 1911, just 20 thousand people were imprisoned, this figure remained relatively stable in the next 10 years before declining by 10 thousand people in 1931. The male prison population recovered to initial points in 1951, and then dramatically surged to nearly 60 thousand prisoners between 1961 and 2001.
Regarding the remaining gender, in 1991, the number of females in jail was approximately 3300 people, noticeably lower than male population at the same period. In the following years, the quantity of women in prison considerably plummeted to a bottom of 500 people in 1941, followed by a gradual recovery to under 2 thousand by 1971. Subsequently, from 1971 to 2001, the population of female prisoners experienced an oscillation prior to reaching around 1600 people at the end of the period.
