The two maps depict the transformation of a coal mining site before and after redevelopment.
Overall, the area underwent a complete alteration in function, transforming from an industrial workplace to a leisure-oriented layout. Most of the facilities have been demolished to make way for several amenities designed for visitors.
Before development, the site functioned as a working mine, with a lorry park situated at the bottom central area and a car park on the left-hand side. There was a medical room at the center, adjacent to which was an entrance for an underground mine for workers. On the left-hand side, there were the staff changing room and an office. The right wing of the map was occupied by two waste tips.
Since then, the site has been transformed into a visitor attraction, with the right-side of the map experiencing a complete makeover. The office and staff changing room have gone and in their place is a museum. Similarly, where the medical room stood, there is now a cafe, with a new souvenir shop nearby, which replaced the old lorry park. Another alteration is the entrance, which is now for visitors. Moreover, the two waste tips have been removed to make room for several amenities, with a new picnic area has been added in the right middle of the map, which is located between the digger driving track at the top and children’s play area at the bottom. Also, a footpath has been introduced, surrounding the center of the map. Despite these changes, the car park remained unaltered.
