On the presented maps there is seen the transformation of the city of Nelson from 2000 to the present.
The main change was in creating a car-free environment, probably to reduce carbon emissions. For this purpose, the road near the city’s center was repurposed into a passage for pedestrians only. A bike rental scheme was introduced in the downtown. There was also launched a tramline to the university. The new train station on the left side of the tramline also contributed to the augmentation of the transport capacity. The old building of the station was demolished.
Another dimension of the city’s transition was an increase in available housing through erection of a hall of residence on the left from the university. A probable surge in the number of population caused a demand in catering and trade facilities. To satisfy these demands, the forest in the north-east of the city was removed and a new shopping centre was built. The old market on the left from the center was replaced by the new shop while a new covered market was established on the right side. The port area accommodated new bars and clubs together with a restaurant.
The change of the city of Nelson into a modern urban entity is impressive.
