The provided floor plans illustrate the transformations that occurred in the South Wing of Walton Museum between 2008 and 2012, following an extensive redevelopment initiative.
Overall, the renovations substantially modernized and expanded the museum’s layout, introducing a range of new facilities, enhancing functionality, and reconfiguring existing spaces.
In 2008, the South Wing comprised several key areas including an Entrance, Reception, Reading Room, Special Exhibition Room, Shop, Cloaks Room, and Stairs. The Special Exhibition Room was situated in the southwestern portion of the layout, adjacent to the Entrance. A two-storey arrangement was present, with the Reception and Shop occupying one side, while the Reading Room and Cloaks Room were positioned on the opposite side, with Stairs placed in between the Shop and Cloaks Room.
By 2012, the layout underwent significant changes, including the construction of a terrace above the Special Exhibition Room and the former Entrance, which was transformed into an Entrance Hall. The Reception and Cloaks Room were merged, creating room for a new Restaurant directly above this combined area. Centrally located, a new Lift was introduced to improve accessibility. Additionally, the previous Cloaks Room was replaced with a dedicated Children Play Area, while a Self-Service Room and an Exhibition Room were added across two new levels, further enhancing the overall visitor experience.
