Overall, there was an upward trend in popularity for tennis, swimming, golf, volleyball and yoga, while the opposite was true for football and basketball. In addition, football was by far the most preferred sport in this country during the given period.
Looking at the chart in more detail, a quarter of the population played tennis sport in 1999, which experienced a slight increase to 30% over the following five years before ending up at 33% in the final year. Meanwhile, the percentage of people chose swimming was just over 30% at the beginning of the period, after that its figure rose modestly to 34% in 2004, staying unchanged throughout the time. Likewise, golf and yoga experienced the same pattern throughout the time, just around a tenth in 1999, remaining the least popular sport in the first year. Thereafter, there was a significant increase to 17% in the next ten years, whereas yoga received a negligible rise to 13% in 2009. Volleyball showed fluctuation throughout the period, with 17% of individuals played this sport in 1999 before reaching a peak of 20% in 2004 and dropping slightly to 18% at the end of the time.
Regarding the remaining sports, with more than 55% of people participating in football in 1999, making it by far the most favoured sport in popularity. Subsequently, there was a dramatic decrease to under half of the population in 2009. Moreover, the proportion of people played basketball was 26%, before declining gradually to 24% in the final year.
