The table displays data on the numbers of people in five different age groups working in four sectors in the UK, with figures provided for both 1998 and 2006.
Overall, the building and education sectors typically had the largest workforces, while the technology sector experienced a remarkable increase in employment, especially among younger age brackets. By contrast, hotel and catering saw a decline in its youngest workforce segment, with minor fluctuations in the older groups.
In 1998, building employed the most people aged 18-25, with over 112,000, and education attracted most employees from 26-55. Technology was a relatively small sector in 1998 for those aged 18-25 and 56-65, but became the largest for 18-45 by 2006, rising dramatically from only 5,497 to 187,600 for 18-25-year-olds.
Meanwhile, hotel and catering observed a drop among the youngest workers but a rise among older age groups. The building sector fell modestly in every category, while education saw only slight changes, especially among the middle-aged and oldest workers.
