The table illustrates the share of consumer spendings on three various items in five European countries in 2020.
Overall, the largest share of consumers across all countries spend money on food/drinks and tobacco. In contrast, the least amount of money was spent on leisure/education. Notably,among the five countries the citizens of Turkey had the highest share of spending in two categories, while the share of spendings of residents from Italy ranked first in only one.
It is noteworthy that the highest share spent on food/drinks/tobacco was reported in Turkey, making up 32.14% of the total. Moreover, almost a quarter (28.19%) of consumers in Ireland spend money on food/drinks/tobacco; whereas, in countries such as Spain (18.80%), Italy (16.36%) and Sweden (15,77%) spendings on this items were approximately similar, with a narrow margin of about 3%.
Regarding the other two categories, the proportion of consumer spending across all countries in those two sections did not exceed 10%. For instance, only 9 out of 100 consumers spend money on clothing/footwear in Italy; in addition, there was a narrow disparity of less than 1% between spendings in clothing/footwear in Turkey (6.63%), Spain (6.51%) and Ireland (6.43%). Moreover, the figure for Sweden was a mere 5.40%, representing the lowest share in this spending category.
Similarly to food/drinks/tobacco, the highest amount of spendings on leisure/education was registered in Turkey, accounting to a total of 4.35%. Meanwhile, the figures for Sweden and Italy followed closely, where the former made up 3.22% of the total and the latter accounted for 3.20%. In Ireland the residents spent 2.21% of their savings for leisure/education, while Spain was responsible for the remaining 1.98%.
