The table above presents a variety of information about students who studied different departments, including English, Modern Languages, History, Physics, Math, and Chemistry, at an Australian university in 2009.
Overall, overseas students at this university showed a strong preference for Math, whereas English was less popular among them. Additionally, female students tended to study English more than any other subject; however, Chemistry appeared to be less favored among them.
It is evident from the table that female students were predominantly interested in English, which accounted for a significant 72% of their choices. In stark contrast, only around 12% of students whose first language was not English and who were born outside Australia chose English. The figures for Chemistry were even lower, attracting only 15% of all students, but the percentage of foreign students enrolled in Chemistry more than doubled that of those in Modern Languages.
Importantly, while Physics and Math both attracted 56% of students who were not born in Australia, Physics was notably more popular among females, attracting 39% compared to Math. Furthermore, History was chosen by approximately 45% of students and ranked second among those whose first language was not English
