The table gives information about the number of people globally, who were left undernourished between 2000 and 2009. The line graph illustrates the grain prices around the world during the same period. Overall, both the number of undernourished people and the cost of the rice and wheat in the global market saw increases of varying degree.
Initially, the number of starved population consisted of 857 million people. A figure then underwent a steady growth until 2006, recording 876 million. Continuing its upward trend, the figure reached a whopping 1024 million individuals in 2009 up from 924 million in 2008.
In terms of prices of the rice and wheat, both started at $200 and rose remarkably over the given time frame. Despite falling numbers in 2002, the cost of the wheat skyrocketed to approximately $1190 in 2009, after reaching all time low at almost $300 in 2006. As opposed to the wheat, the worth of rice stayed stable until 2006 showing around $300 dollars, and this followed by a rapid rise to about $900 at the end of the period.
