The tables compare the sales of Fairtrade coffee and Fairtrade bananas in five European countries between 1999 and 2004. Figures are given in millions of euros.
Overall, Fairtrade coffee sales increased in every country, with the UK showing a particularly dramatic rise. Meanwhile, Fairtrade banana sales rose sharply in Switzerland, the UK, and Belgium but declined in Sweden and Denmark.
In terms of coffee, the UK had the largest jump, from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million in 2004. Switzerland experienced more moderate growth. Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden all saw smaller increases, rising by less than 1 million each.
With bananas, Switzerland was by far the biggest market: it grew from 15 million euros to 47 million over the same period. The UK’s sales climbed significantly as well, from 1 to 5.5 million, while Belgium’s figures went up from 0.6 to 4 million. By contrast, Sweden and Denmark both registered decreases in banana sales, falling from 1.8 to 1 million and from 2 to 0.9 million, respectively.
