The tables illustrate the turnover of two different Fairtrade products, namely coffee and bananas in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden in two separate years, measured in millions of euros.
Overall, it is clear that there was an upward trend in the sales of coffee in all five European countries, while only three out of five countries saw an increase in revenue for Fairtrade bananas. Additionally, England witnessed by far the most increase regarding sales in two categories.
Looking at the information in more detail, in 1999, the figure for sales of Fairtrade coffee in the UK were 1.5 million euros, this had risen dramatically in the following 5 years and reached 20 million euros in 2004. Similarly, Switzerland also doubled the turnover for coffee from 3 to 6 million euros in the same period. There was a merely modest increase in the sales figures for Denmark, Belgium and Sweden, by 0.2, 0.7 and 0.2 million euros respectively.
Looking at the Fairtrade banana sector, England also went up strikingly over three times from 15 to 47 million euros regarding revenue for this. An increase trend was also seen in Denmark and Switzerland, by more than five and four times proportionally. By contrast, the turnover for Fairtrade bananas in Sweden witnessed an over half decrease from 2 to 0.9 million euros. Also similar was Belgium whose sales of bananas went down gradually by 0.8 million euros.
