The two tables illustrate how Fair-trade-labelled coffee and bananas were sold in five different European countries in the years 1999 and 2004.
It is apparent that in 1999, Switzerland held the title of the largest banana and coffee supplier. However, 2004 witnessed the rise of the UK, which sold the most coffee, while Switzerland’s sales of bananas remained the biggest.
In terms of coffee sales, the highest amount of sales registered to the UK, at exactly 20 million Euros, which skyrocketed from only one and a half million in 1999. Following the former data, Switzerland saw an increase from 3 million to 6 million Euros in a 6-year period. Additionally, the sales in Denmark and Belgium were 1.8 and 1 million Euros, and then, increased to 2 and 1.7 million respectively after 6 years. Noticeably, Sweden stayed at the lowest sale volume in the researched years, with total sales of 1 million Euros in 2004.
Regarding the banana table, the lion’s share was continually held by Switzerland with an enormous amount of sales, at 15 and 47 million Euros in 1999 and 2004. In addition, both the UK and Belgium’s figures climbed considerably to 5.5 and 4 million Euros in turn. It is notable that Sweden and Denmark sold a similar amount of bananas, at 1.8 and 2 million in 1999, which subsequently experienced a fall to 1 and 0.9 million Euros.
