The visual data provides insights into the sales of fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five different countries in 1999 and 2004, illustrated by two tables.
Overall, fairtrade-labelled coffee had become the most popular in the UK by 2004. Meanwhile, the majority of bananas were consumed in Switzerland, and the sales of bananas also significantly increased during the stated period.
As for fairtrade-labelled coffee, Switzerland topped the list of countries in the sales of coffee, with 1.8 million euros, followed by that of Denmark (1.8m). The UK came in third at 1.5m, and Belgium and Sweden contributed 1m and 0.8m, respectively. However, the UK became the biggest country of coffee consumption in 2004, with total sales at 20m, which was approximately 13 times the sales in 1999, while the volume in other countries didn’t change much.
In terms of bananas, 15 million euros of bananas were sold in Switzerland, which was considerably larger than other countries, whose sales of bananas only ranged from 0.6m to 2m. After 5 years, Switzerland experienced an intense growth in the volume of sales to 47m. In contrast, the sales in other countries almost stayed unchanged except for the UK.
