The tables provide information about the sales of Fairtrade‑labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 across five European countries: the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
Overall, it is clear that sales of both products increased in most countries over the period. Banana sales were significantly higher than coffee sales, with Switzerland dominating the banana market, while the UK showed the most remarkable growth in coffee sales.
In terms of coffee, Switzerland had the highest sales in 1999, at 3 million euros, followed by Denmark at 1.8 million. The UK recorded only 1.5 million euros at that time. By 2004, however, coffee sales in the UK rose sharply to 20 million euros, overtaking Switzerland, which grew to 6 million. Denmark and Belgium saw only slight increases, while Sweden remained unchanged at 1 million euros.
As for bananas, Switzerland also led in 1999 with 15 million euros, which more than tripled to 47 million by 2004. The UK experienced notable growth from 1 million to 5.5 million euros, and Belgium also increased from 0.6 million to 4 million. In contrast, Sweden’s banana sales fell slightly from 1.8 million to 1 million euros, while Denmark’s figures declined from 2 million to just 0.9 million euros.
