Overall, it’s clear that the main purpose of travel outside the UK was Holiday, and Western Europe was the favorite destination for the residents. In contrast, North America recorded the fewest visitors throughout the period.
Looking at the visit purposes, the main purpose of travel outside the UK was holiday, with 15,246 travelers in 1994. Despite the number declining in the second year, it increased significantly to a record 20,700 in 1998. Business was the second-highest reason for travel; it started at 3,155 in 1994 and continued to rise slightly, reaching 3,957 in 1998. Whereas, visits to friends and relatives recorded 2,689 in 1994, then grew to 3,181in 1998. In addition, the number of residents who traveled for other reasons was very low compared to previous mentioned reasons, while it started at 982 and ended with 990.
Turning to the visit destinations, it is noticeable that Western Europe was the favorite region to travel by the United Kingdom residents in all years, while it received a 19,371 person in 1994, and this figure increased markedly over time, recording 24,519 in 1998. Whereas, the number of people traveled to other areas rose slightly, from 1,782 in the first year to achieve 2,486 after 4 years. In addition, travelers figures to North America remained the lowest, it was 919 only in 1994, although it experienced an increase over time.
