The bar chart illustrates the percentage of biofuels consumed by transportation in six different countries taking part in the European Union between 2009 and 2010.
Overall, there was an increase in the average proportion of renewable-based fuel used in the transport sector in six countries examined, which was the result of growths in the figures for Poland, Spain, and Greece. In addition, a levelling off was seen in the figure for France, while Slovakia and Austria witnessed downward trends, but Slovakia still consistently had the highest figures.
Just over 4% of sustainable fuel allocated in transport systems was the European Union average in 2009, with a subsequent rise to approximately 5% in 2010. Similar changes, but to different extents, could be seen in the figures for Poland, Spain, and Greece, which grew from 5% to 6%, from 3.5% to shy of 5%, and from just over 1% to 2% respectively, throughout the period.
The share of renewable energy used in the transport sector of Slovakia started at around 9.3% in 2009, after which it experienced a significant drop to under 8% in 2010. The figure for Austria also witnessed similar changes, decreasing from about 6.5% to 5.2% during this period. The figure for France remained stable at exactly 6% over the period.
