The table presents statistics about the demographics of New Zealand in 2011 and 2012, devided by four age group.
Overall, the country saw a slight increase in the total number of population, especially regarding those aged 40+, while the proportion of younger individuals mildly dropped.
It is evident from the table, that the number of New Zealand citizens, whose age was below 15 years old in 2011, decreased by 0,2% in 2012, totalling 896,364 children. The following age group (15 to 39 years olds) which was almost half larger compared to the previous one, have seen the same drop. Taken together, people aged less than 40 years old constitute the majority of New Zealand’s population, yet their percentage has shrinked.
The last two age groups, accounting to almost two million people, have both enlarged their portion in the total population number. 40-64 year olds represent the second-largest age group, and their number further increased by 0,6% over the year. The last population group, named “65+”, is the smallest one, yet it has seen the most significant growth, which is 4%. Therefore, the total number of elderly in New Zealand went up by almost 23 thousand individuals.
