The table illustrates the proportion of human resources in six different fields in Australia from 1989 to 2009.
Overall, there were significant changes over a twenty-year period. It is noticeable that some industries across manufacturing and retail experienced a considerable decline, while the percentages of workforce employed in health care, construction, education, and tourism increased slowly.
It is clear that the share of workers in manufacturing dropped substantially from 15% to 9.8% over the period. Furthermore, by 2009, the percentage of workforce employed in retail had decreased slightly by 1.7% , whereas health care saw an increase at 1.7%.
By contrast, the segments of workers in construction and education rose slightly from 7.6% and 6.8% to 8.3% and 7.5% respectively. In addition, the shares of labor forces in health care and tourism approximately went up, at around 2% during a period of 20 years. In contrast, in many sectors, the percentage of people employed saw an increase, rather than a decrease throughout the period.
