In modern times, a number of young people are unfamiliar with the traditions and culture of their country. There are many reasons for this, specifically, family and community influence. Not knowing their own culture and traditions can cause negative development by putting in danger cultural identity.

Family and community play a key role in adolescent’s knowledge about their traditions and culture, as they conventionally share cultural practices, values from one to the next generation. Some families may no longer prioritize teaching their children about cultural traditions often due to busy lifestyles or a shift toward modern, global standards. Moreover, young people are exposed to global trends, media and popular culture from other countries, too. The younger generation may find it difficult to be connected with their roots without guidance of family and cultural reinforcement from local communities.

As a result, youngsters are far from all these traditions and cultural aspects of their homeland, leading to a gradual decline in cultural knowledge. The most dangerous outcome can be loss of cultural identity. When young people are disconnected from their traditions and values, they may not experience sense of belonging and identity. Furthermore, lack of cultural knowledge of some young people may cause a chain of forgetting traditions and their culture. They will have no wisdom to share with next generation.

In conclusion, one of the reason why some youngsters are not familiar with their traditions and culture is lack of these values in family and community. This may lead to cultural erosion and destruction of cultural identity.
