Band 9: 3. Parents often give children everything they ask for and let them do what they like Is it good for children? What are the consequences when they grow up?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary times, there is an ongoing trend among parents to accommodate every demand of their children and allow them to pursue whatever they desire. From my perspective, this parenting style seems counterproductive for children and could have detrimental long-term implications when they reach adulthood.

Admittedly, fulfilling all of a child’s wishes can have adverse effects on their development. For one, when parents meet every demand, children may grow into dependent individuals. This is evident among many university students who struggle with basic day-to-day tasks, such as managing their finances or creating short-term study plans. These harmful habits often stem from overindulgence by parents during their formative years. Additionally, meeting all of a child’s needs inadvertently deprives them of motivation toward their future goals. Children observe everything their parents do for them, and as a result, some students may lose the drive to excel academically because they believe that their parents will secure them high-paying jobs regardless of their academic performance.

Furthermore, allowing children to partake in any activity that interests them can take a heavy toll on younger generations as they transition into adulthood. Firstly, many outdoor activities can pose risks to children’s physical health. For instance, if children are allowed to engage in extreme sports such as rock climbing, scuba diving, or bungee jumping, they may encounter life-threatening situations such as injuries, disappearances, or even death in the worst cases. Therefore, parents’ permissiveness in such scenarios can have harmful impacts on their children. Moreover, unrestricted participation in favored activities can also negatively affect children’s mental well-being. Excessive gaming, binge-watching, and prolonged use of social media can lead to social isolation, depression, and unhealthy comparisons. Consequently, if parents do not allow their children to engage in these damaging pastimes, they may be less likely to experience mental health issues.

In conclusion, satisfying all of a child’s requirements ultimately does a disservice to their future development, fostering reliance on others and diminishing their intrinsic motivation. Meanwhile, granting them the freedom to pursue anything they desire can also have negative outcomes as they mature, impacting both their physical and mental health.
