It is argued that advertising hinders people from becoming unique individuals by making them desire to be and seem alike. While acknowledging the reasons for this prospal, I partly agree with it for several reasons
On the one hand , there are many compelling reasons for why people agree that advertising discourages people from being distinct by making us look alike. Firstly, some companies nowadays promote ideal role models of human appearance, lifestyle and behavior. When large companies create campaigns about product variants and create a trend due to advertising on social media and public transportations and the famous person which is also the reason why it attracts the teenagers and make them look the same with their products. For example,Frisbee, which gained millions of players in 2021 thanks to its fashion and social advertising. People who rarely play any sport blog and share their pictures of playing Frisbee on the internet just to follow the same trend. Secondly, advertising often presents ideal images and lifestyles, making people want to be like those role models. In fact, when in constant contact with these ideal images on the Internet, people often tend to want to become similar to the people and lifestyles that are promoted, which means that more and more people will have a need to buy products to become such a model and everyone will look the same. If there is a beauty product that is advertised and gives a good result by celebrities, girls will rush to buy to have to get clear skin like their idol
On the other hand , it is understandable why advertising encourages people to express their personality by promoting diversity in appearance. Many companies nowadays promote their products and services by encouraging customers to be distinguished, rather than blending in.
When the brand designs the products with unique form and excellent quality , it will expand the concepts for customers so that they will not be bored and include special personal services which would help the clients feel valued and appreciated, further strengthening the brand’s appeal and loyalty. For instance, Apple under Steve Jobs, whose slogan was “Think different”. Apple’s devices like the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook are aimed at a niche market of digital enthusiasts who crave the latest innovations and cutting-edge technologies. Consequently, advertising also inspires people to be diverse and companies have also recently promoted campaigns to cultivate a loyal and devoted customer base who are willing to pay a premium for products that help them stand out from the crowd.
In conclusion, while advertising can contribute to limiting personal uniqueness by creating ideals that people feel they need to meet, it can also inspire consumers to be different and express their own personality.
