Some people hold a belief that university students should contribute to their local community by participating in voluntary activities. I wholeheartedly agree with this viewpoint as students can gain tremendous benefits through doing voluntary work during their university years.
On the one hand, participating in voluntary work can pose certain challenges on young people given the demanding nature of most voluntary activities . Traveling to remote areas or going through various treacherous windy terrains to provide local people with water and healthcare or spending the whole day listening and sharing stories with elderly people often require significant amounts of time and efforts of students. Therefore, those young individuals are likely to be distracted from their studying at university. This problem can be exacerbated if students have to deal with hectic schedules of their part-time jobs. The failure to balance time between doing work voluntarily, coupled with working part time, and studying at university can give rise to young individuals’ mental issues such as depression or burnout, ultimately having detrimental impacts on their academic performance.
On the other hand, I side with those who encourage students to do voluntary work as a means to contribute to their local community as it can enable children’s overall development. By interacting with people coming from underprivileged backgrounds and listening to their adversaries, youngsters can cultivate feelings of gratitude for their luckier lives. This positive feeling can motivate young people to deal with miserable experiences in their lives as they realize that regardless of difficulties they encounter, they are still luckier than
other people, and thus lead them to live a more positive and fufilling life. Moreover, these meaningful activities can instill positive values such as resilience, perseverance, and diligence in students, fostering their character development. In addition, participating in volutary work can foster students’ professional development. Various skills such as communication or time management can go a long way towards helping young people to deal with tasks effectively, and thus enhance their productivity at the work place.
In conclusion, while students are likely to be under pressure when they engage in voluntary endeavors, these meaningful actions can bolster their personal and professional development. Thus, it is avisable to encourage youngsters to contribute to society voluntarily for the sake of their comprehensive growth.
