Band 7+: Day 1- With the increasing use of mobile phones and computers, fewer people are writing letters. Some people think that the traditional skill of writing letters will disappear completely. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that the increasing utilization of mobile phones and computers discourages people from writing letters, causing the complete disappearance of the conventional expertise of doing so. From my perspective, I completely disagree with this viewpoint for several reasons

The belief that modern technologies will lead to the extinction of traditional writing is perhaps based on the presumption that mobile phones and computers are more cost-effective and convenient than paper in the long term, especially for students. However, this line of reasoning is not necessarily true as it does not consider the fact that the initial cost of such electrical appliances hampers poor students from purchasing them. As a result, they still make use of paper for its reasonable cost, and some school even prohibit students from using modern appliances to create an equal environment for all. For example, according to recent statistics, most schools in developing countries like Vietnam have always promoted paper usage for writing to avoid in-school discrimination and guarantee teachers’ total control over students’ behaviors during lessons

On a business level, traditional writing definitely outweighs digital one in terms of professionalism and privacy. In some professional fields, the formal letter remains a standard for communication. This can be witnessed in the working practice of many incorporations which places emphasis on professionalism and respect; therefore, written letters are still in high demand for making business correspondence, job applications, and formal requests. Additionally, although mobile phones and computers can assist companies with exchanging data through the online network, these appliances make them more vulnerable to hacking or data breaches. This consequently encourages businesses to stick to paper letters with a view to protecting their confidential information from such issues. These are the main rationales why the traditional skill of writing letters will persist in the competition with mobile phones and computers.

On balance, with all the aforementioned positives of written letters, I believe that the possibility of its complete disappearance in the future is virtually low.
