Band 6+: Despite the benefits for health, fewer people today than ever before exercise by walking. why is this? What can be done to encourage more walking?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Walking has long been considered one of the simplest and most accessible form of exercise, requiring no special equipment and skills. Despite the well-known health benefits, fewer people today choose walking as a form of exercise compared to previous generations. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I will go through the reasons for it and propose several effective solutions.

On the one hand, one of the main reason is the increasing use of cars and public transport. Many people prefer driving or taking a bus because it is faster and more convenient, especially in busy cities. Furthermore, increasingly demanding work and study schedule leave people with limited free time, making them less willing to walk. Another contributing factor is the widespread use of technology. Many individuals prefer spending their leisure time using smartphones, playing video and games instead of engaging in outdoor activities such as walking. Besided that, as temperatures continue to rise, weather conditions are becoming hotter and humid, people are avoiding exercises in cities.

On the other hand, these solutions are not easy. First of all, government should invest in well designed pedestrian infrastructure, including wider sidewalks, green parks, safe walking routes and better street lighting. These improvements would make walking not only safer but also more enjoyable for people. This problem can be tackled by walking early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the weather is cooler. Furthermore, installing cameras and employing more security would help reduce crime and make public areas safer. Moreover, government should introduce more oublic safety initiatives and launch health-awareness campaigns to encourage people to adopt a more active lifestyle.

In conclusion, encouraging people to walk requires a long-term commitment from both policymakers and communities. If effective measures are implemented walking can once again become a natural part of people’s daily lives.
