Band 7+: Discipline is an ever-increasing problem in modern schools. Some people think that discipline should be the responsibility of teachers, while others think that this is the role of parents. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

The issue of discipline in modern schools is a topic widely debated by parents, educators, and authorities. The question of who should bear the responsibility for instilling discipline in students—teachers or parents—continues to provoke discussion. In this essay, both perspectives will be examined, after which I will present my viewpoint on the matter.

To begin with, proponents of the view that teachers should be primarily responsible for disciplining students argue that educators possess the necessary skills and expertise to effectively manage students’ behavior and instill moral values. Schools are deemed to be microcosms of society, wherein students interact and socialize. Teachers, being in a position of authority, are able to observe and address behavioral issues among students. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in imparting values education, such as personal responsibility and positive social conduct, which are essential for students’ holistic development.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that parents hold the key responsibility for cultivating discipline in their children. Parents are often a child’s primary caregivers and role models, thus exerting a significant influence on their upbringing. They have more time to interact with and guide their children compared to teachers. By teaching values like respect, empathy, and altruism, parents shape their children’s character and moral compass.

In conclusion, while both teachers and parents play indispensable roles in shaping students’ discipline and values, I firmly believe that teachers should assume a significant share of the responsibility. Educators are equipped to provide specialized training and support to students, helping them navigate ethical dilemmas and societal norms. Therefore, in my view, it is crucial for teachers to receive professional development and governmental backing to effectively instill discipline in students.
